Had to throw a vote in for Gunpei. The guy gave us Metroid, created the Game & Watch and the Gameboy, and collaborated on Donkey Kong and Mario Bros.

I'm sure it's simply because I don't believe you were a game developer during the retro era. Otherwise, you'd be number 1 (2 or 3 at worst).

I'm afraid that question is completely subjective and cannot be answered without intensive debate and extensive argument.

Hard not to pick Miyamoto, but I think some of the 2600 guys deserve a nod for doing more of the game themselves, and working with more limited resources. Miyamoto had increasingly big teams for his console games, and while he's no doubt a genius and legend of game design, there were lots of people involved in Mario, Zelda, etc. All that said I should still probably pick him if this were a more objective contest. But it's not, so screw it, I'm going with David Crane.
If you can't do it with 8 bits, you don't need to do it.

I was born in 1980 & I seem to prefer the Japanese developers like Miyamoto, Gunpei Yokoi & Yuji Naka. I definitely played a lot of pitfall though & was glad to see David Crane up there. Oh! & I almost forgot: Yu Suzuki!
