You guys should totally do a top ten list for forgotten mascots
That'd be a great top 10! I enjoyed Bonk's Adventure quite a bit - never played it when I had a TG-16 (oddly), but it was the first game I bought on the Wii's Virtual Console and I played through. Definitely a fun platformer, but yeah, as a mascot he didn't do a whole lot beyond the initial splash. Then again, the console he was representing didn't have a long life or good successor to give him a chance to keep in the public eye.
If you can't do it with 8 bits, you don't need to do it.

I don't know whether he'll agree with me on this answer or not. But this is mine. lol

Devil's Crush (or the pussy version -but still worth getting and playing- on the Genesis called Dragon's Fury, which is what I've played) just kind of said to itself "I'm a pinball game on a console, what can I do to differentiate myself and not suck." and does a great job at not trying to be just a copy of an actual pinball machine or trying to just copy the mechanics of a pinball machine. It's firmly a VIDEO pinball that still retains a lot of the basic mechanics of real pinball, but takes advantage of being a video game with multiple screens, enemies that march around and actively fire at you at times, the massive kick-ass boss screens, etc etc. That's where I personally see it being a shooter disguised as a pinball game.

Yeah, I see this definitely. In a more recent example, Metroid Pinball has a lot of the same features.

My first reaction to this was a seething cauldron of hate, but I think you're right. Because I put the TG16 so high on my list of older consoles, I tend to put Bonk on the same level as Mario and Sonic. But I think that's probably only for us who have affinity for early 90s mascots. At the time, Bonk at least closer in terms of popularity than the forgotten mascot it is now.

i wouldnt call bonk a 'failed' mascot. i would call him a b or c team mascot. hes up there with alex kidd and crash bandicoot. there was never a horrible bonk game. its just there wasnt a transcendent one either.

Failed was a spur of the moment word, forgotten would have been a better term.
