Starcraft: Retribution Review

Starcraft had been released for a couple of months now, and was very well received. The game was followed by the first add-on pack, and another company ceased the opportunity to create another authorized endeavor, to bite into Starcraft’s magnificence. It was also a great way to cash-in some quick bucks before the release of the hosted expansion pack, entitled Brood War. So, Wizard Works took the lead and published another add-on pack for Starcraft. Once again, it came with a new campaign, and multiplayer maps. Starcraft: Retribution than became the second authorized add-on for the game.

Retribution much like Insurrection isn’t terribly excellent. It has its fair share of amateurism --The voice acting however is quite respectable, they used most of the voice alteration tools Blizzard used, so that the Protoss and Zergs could sound a little bit more, genuine. Pretty much all the missions of the respective race campaigns are centered on the capture of a crystal who once belonged to the Xel’Naga; the ancient race that created the Protoss and the Zergs. This said crystal was told to have immense powers, and every race has the conviction to make it their own.

But, there’s so much you can do with retrieving such artifact before it becomes tedious. In fact, most of the missions are blatant “kill’em all” set objectives that requires only destroying every enemy buildings on the map. It is both very bland and lazy much like Insurrection did in its level repetition, but with Retribution, it’s downright rushed out. The saving grace however is that the resources are plentiful, and accessible. They are set-up in a way where it’s not random and it captures well the flow of the game. Most of them have decent spacing. and are usually not in the way of enemies. The maps feel more natural, unfortunately in multiplayer, they are terribly empty. This time, the bases are too distant and with little to no natural protection from surprise attacks.

Retribution however is a little bit faster in the resolution of maps due to the abundance of resources. The good old rush of Dragoons or Hydralisks will clear pretty much everything on your path, unless you are totally ignorant of the basic tactics against the computer. One of the strange features however is that there is little to no use of hero units, which in Insurrection was quite welcomed. The add-on seems well structured, but it also comes out short in a lot of already explained instances. One of the most annoying things about it though, it that on pretty much every campaign mission debriefings, once you partake into chaining the next quest in the order, it doesn’t follow. That means that you’ll have to surf back into the menus in order to choose the correct subs equal mission, otherwise, it will only repeat the former.

Starcraft: Retribution much like its predecessor, is in no way, shape or form the equivalent to Brood War, but it is a respectable addition for zealous fans of the game. If you are looking for a serious, well done campaign, you might want to look into Retribution for a quick spin. But, like any unofficial spin-offs, it’s not quite the business a lot of us are looking for.
