Listening to the JJ Hendricks interview. I was the 'one guy' who had played in the Campus Challenge back in the day. I qualified 2nd at the Purdue contest, and the final got hit by a thunderstorm (it was outside on the quad, played out of a couple of trailers that opened up optimus prime style for the 6(8?) stations that would play at a time), so it was canceled and the #1 qualifier won the trip to the nationals. I can't complain since the guy that won taught me the secret to getting the best score and we were miles above the next few qualifiers. I think i won $50 for 2nd place.

And I can guarantee you I haven't played SMB3 since that day until the CGE2012 contest :). I remembered exactly what I needed to do to score the max possible (spot in SMB3 with the constantly spawning enemies and chaining together jumps with the wings to slow your descent. rinse and repeat, but leave yourself enough time to complete the Pinbot and Dr Mario requirements. In the original challenge you had to get to minimum standards or else your score was DQed. Needless to say, my hands could no longer execute what my brain wanted them to :)

Perhaps at CGE I need to set up a challenge. I play one game of Intellivision Burgertime at the beginning of the show, and if anyone can beat that score during the duration of the show, I give them a prize of some sort.

Just listened to that myself. Glad to hear your story. I've definitely have heard much less on the Campus Challenge.

Scott, I really enjoyed these last couple of Hardware Flashbacks covering pinball/arcade maintenance and repair. Thanks!

If you haven't already covered it yet, could you discuss how to handle rust on metal pieces too large for a tumbler? I will google it, but would like to hear your expertise on the matter.

getting caught up on older episodes. excalibur frogger and space invaders? i thought for sure one of you would have had the entex adventurevision as a candidate with its led matrix, spinning mirror and interchangeable games. not to mention coleco zaxxon with its simulated 3d effect using a mirror. the other excaliber tabletop arcade game mini cab was family guy pinball.
