Hi

This is a bit self promoting but I've recently uploaded a video of me completing the ZX Spectrum classic Alien 8 to YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD-tDt_0fRc

I completed it with my 'home made' spectrum joypad. Basically I took an old PC 15 D-pin joypad and modified the output to work as a 9 D-pin Atari joystick. It was all a bit of a hack soldering wise but it works really well. I've also made an arcade joystick for my speccy :).

I'll get some pictures uploaded to the web so I can post them on here.

Next up is Knight Lore.

Nice! I always found these games frustrating as hell! Looking forward to watching it.

Cheers retroshaun.

The main thing about Alien 8 is you need to know the whole map and which valve is needed where. I learned it when I was a kid then again about 10 years ago. In my mind the map is split into North, South East and West sections and I know which valves are needed in which areas. Conversely in Knightlore you can ignore a huge chunk of the map to complete the game. That makes Alien 8 a much better game in my view.

I've completed Knightlore too now the video is here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzk4DLsFE0o&feature=youtu.be

I almost died at the start, was down to 0 additional men. I decided to keep going and see if I could complete it and I did in the end. My modified gamepad made things a bit difficult as it sometimes hits a diagonal when I don't want to. That's why there are some random looking left or right turns.

I watched through Alien 8 - will take a look at this too. Does the Alien 8 vid chop off at the end?

It shouldn't I'll take a look ... yes that's not all of it I'll see if I can fix it.

Turned out that the video had been cut short at the end and everything I tried to rip it did the same thing. I've recorded another one and uploaded it instead:

... at least that's shorted than the other two.

Have a look at the video - once you know what you are doing it really is pretty easy.

Me neither and i love Ultimate games (except some of the very late ones -*cough),Knightlore is easier and suffers from less slowdown than Alien 8 but excuses aside i simply think Alien 8 is tougher pure and simple,at least on Knightlore you can get good variance with charm positions but Alien 8 crushes me every time so i have to tip my hat to anyone who can complete this game.
My cousin did complete Alien 8 too back in the day and last week started playing Pentagram again.
Ps i just subscribed to the your YT channel Saberman

Cool - I've now got video of me completing Atic Atac so that's next for an upload.

I much prefer Alien 8 and have been able to complete that for years. It was only recently that I managed to complete Knightlore. I might try Pentagram soon but I didn't really like that as much as the other Saberman games. I'll probably try Saberwulf next.

Gotta watch this. A great game i never completed.

It was the game that arrived with my Spectrum Xmas 1983 I was instantly hooked. So of course I have to agree :). It still has a terrific loading screen one of the all time best IMHO.

I agree i have had the AA loading screen as a desktop and it looks awesome, one of the best Speccy games ever.

I haven't forgotten about this by the way it is just that Saberwulf is harder than I remembered. I've just managed to complete it for the first time but didn't video it :(. Hopefully I'll be able to get a video up in a few weeks.

After 7 goes this morning I finally managed to get a completed game on DVD. Video is here:

I was playing ultra cautious by the end and had to pause it a couple of time to consult a map.

Grabbing that one too.

Thanks, another great game I never completed, but I never underestimated it though. LOL.

Ooooer :)

Thanks, another great game I never completed, but I never underestimated it though. LOL.

I did a little when I set out to complete it. It can feel a little unfair as you can easily lose a lot of lives in a row. It makes up for it by giving you lots of extra lives though.

My next walk-through is on uTube. This time it is Starquake, as I said in the Speccy Top 10 thread, it is the best Ultimate "clone" game on the spectrum. Like Saberwulf it feels a bit unfair in places but makes up for it by giving you lots of extra lives. You start with 4 but I managed to get up to 24 at one point and finished the game with 22:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyOGqE3C_S0&feature=youtu.be

I'm thinking of going for Skool Daze next as it was one of SoCal's favorites in the top 10.

My next video is here:
http://youtu.be/b-h6vJatUp0

Sorry it isn't Skool Daze. I discovered that to actually complete Skool Daze it can get really boring. Once or twice I spent almost an hour staying out of trouble and waiting for Mr Creek to spill the beans on what year he was born. In the end I gave in and when for a homebrew game - Subacuatic by the Mojo twins. As this is a 128K game I needed to use my 128K speccy I also used my new divIDE to load it. No more making a cup of team while you wait for a game to load :). If anyone is interested I'm happy to write up a review of it here by the way?

Unfortunately when I hook my 128K speccy to my DVD recorder the screen flashes periodically. That happens when using either composite video or RF so I think my DVD recorder might be to blame. If anyone knows what the answer might be please let me know?

And another one:
http://youtu.be/-vDRV-7mqxw

Even though I don't think anyone is watching them anymore. I don't care thought I'm going to keep going. Picking a game and learning to complete it then videoing it is fun.

After completing Subacuatic I thought I'd have a go at the sequel, Subacuatic Reloaded. It might be because I played Subacuatic first but I think the sequel is a lot easier. To overcome the bright flashes I was getting with the last video I used a video capture USB device. Although I don't think the image is as sharp :-|, comments welcome.

As promised I'm still going :).

My latest walk through is Rex part 1. My intention is the record the walk-through of the second part using the code at the end to make a complete walk-through of the game. This is a cool game and well worth trying for anyone that hasn't played it before.

I'm just getting going on part 2 now and that's really tough. It is a great game, I'm finding it hard to put down at the moment.

On a related note I played Jetpac all the way back round to the first ship/screen last night and wished I'd recorded that so I could have put that up.

My next video is now live on youTube. As promised I completed and uploaded Rex Part 2 yesterday:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsUudW2mtCE

It is one of those games that now I've completed it I'm sad that it is finished. I think the last 4 videos I've posted are a bit more obscure that some of the early ones, e.g. Knightlore or Atic Atac but all are terrific games and highly recommended to anyone who's into older games.

It has been a while but I've added a couple of new videos this morning. They are walkthroughs of levels 1-20 and 21-41 of Mushroom man for the ZX spectrum. I choose Mushroom Man as it is a very addictive game and when I got stuck and looked for a video walkthrough there wasn't one.

http://youtu.be/LiXiNjCTzJU

http://youtu.be/oAqh5U2eQMo

Unlike my other videos this hasn't been done on original hardware. I used Speculator's video capture capability and it is much better quality than the previous videos.

Hey saberman, watched a few of your videos today. Good work! Made me very nostalgic!

I really like playing games on my TV with a controller these days rather than on my small laptop screen with keyboard. Is there a legal or easy way of playing the old spectrum classics like alien 8 and knightlore and pyjamarama on a modern TV? with a modern controller?

I am going to build a steam machine PC next year and hook that up to the TV but I assume it won't have a keyboard. Just a controller.

Hi

Glad you liked them I'm still going with the Mushroom Man levels at the moment. It is a really obscure game so there aren't many people watching the levels. I'll get back to some classics when those levels are complete.

If you have a Steam Box and can run emulators on it then EmuZWin allows a different controller to keyboard mapping file to be loaded for each game. That lets you have different controller to keyboard mappings for all you favorite games. I have a document I found on-line a few years ago that explains how to set it up. Along with loads of other emulators. If you want it PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it to you. I run EmuZWin on my MAME cab and it works really well but was a bit fiddly to set up in the first place.

As for legality check out World of Spectrum (http://www.worldofspectrum.org/) what what you can legally download and play. Unfortunately you can't legally play alien 8 and knightlore. Pyjamarama is fine to download and play though.
