Stalking the Retro plays Sonic 4 for the Super Famicom. Yes you heard that right Sonic 4 was released on the SNES and Super Famicom. Well it's actually a pirate cart that I picked up recently. It's a famous hack of Speedy Gonzalez with Sonic and Mario sprites mixed in. In this thread I will show you odd and interesting things that I find in Korea. Retro is difficult to find here and it's usually crazy stuff like this.

Stalking the Retro goes to a North Korean Dirtcade!. Well actually it is a shiny South Korean arcade but that doesn't make headlines. Two games are shown in this video: Crazy Taxi and Terminator Salvation. The video was shot at two different arcades in Seoul S. Korea. The Terminator Salvation video was shot at an arcade called Sega Fun It. The most retro of the machines Crazy taxi was shot at a small arcade near my local movie theater. Listen to the wonderful sounds and see the sights at a South Korean Arcade.

You will notice a few glitches which were caused by converting the 3gp format that my cell phone records in.

Well now I know this isn't real. This month's podcast explains in detail why Sonic and Mario can't be in the same room.

Stalking the Retro becomes a podcast. The premier episode covers essential topics like retro consoles, retro games, modern games, bad movies, great British Scifi and of course necrophilia. Wait....what? Yes we do get a bit raunchy so be forewarned. Special thanks to Septic Lemon for joining this episode albeit at gunpoint. He really stole the show and should think about creating his very own podcast. I mean everyone is doing it these days.

The first episode is a mere 40 minutes long and only 27mbs to download. Why not give it a listen?

Stalking the retro reviews and abuses another psp clone. This time it's a psp emulation machine/mp4 media player. No real PSPs were hurt in the making of this video. Korean beer review added free of charge.

Stalking the Retro reviews the Tomy Lupin VFD electronic game. The d-pad was barely working so I cleaned the contacts and buttons and now it plays like a new machine. Thank you Socal Mike and the awesome Game Gavel from whom I purchased this sweet little piece of rare video gaming history! It's a pretty fun game and unlike the other videos of it on youtube you actually get to see all three screens.

My excited un-boxing of an Atari 2600 and games. Special thanks go out to Socal for helping me get my retro on! This video was lost because of an unfortunate problem with my computer failing to recognize the cheap ass little flip video camera that I filmed it with. I finally got around to fixing the problem and now here is the lost episode of Stalking the Retro. You are probably saying so what he got an Atari 2600 those are common! Yes they may be common where you live but here in South Korea they are nowhere to be found. I never owned an Atari 2600 before but as a kid I fondly remember playing these games at my cousin's house.

I finally show off my American Sega Genesis that I picked up at a gaming market here in Korea. Also some interesting Korean game variations and a close look at some Japanese and Korean game manuals and brochures. I have only ever seen two of these for sale in Korea and both were American systems. I really hope to find a Samsung Genesis someday! Please watch and I'm begging you to please subscribe to my channel. I promise it won't be a wasted sub!

STR picks up a boxed U.S. model Sega Game Gear. Yes I went back to the same booth where I found the Rare Game Boy Light and sure enough he had one with the box in Grade A shape! I paid too much for it of course, about 50 bucks, but it did come with a pretty interesting game. Let me know if you have ever heard of or played this game. Apparently it is the last officially released game for the Game Gear!

My third video this week. This time I do a let's play of Sonic Blast for the Game Gear. From what I have read this is the last game to come out officially for the Sega Game gear. It was included in my Game Gear pickup. I used Kega Fusion, recorded it with fraps and did a little commentary. If you want to see what it looks like on a real game gear check out my Game Gear pickup video in this thread or on you tube!

Just listening to this now, I don't know if you get it later or not but the film you are referring to might be Micro Men which is a great dramatisation of the story and the time.

Oh, and Amstrad bought Sinclair very late on and only pretty much rebadged the Sinclair QL as their own.

I did a segment on the story of Sinclair a good while ago and focused on the C5.

I have decided to turn Stalking the Retro into a community type podcast. I have already recorded and released episodes with forum member Septic Lemon and Dhalamar. In an upcoming episode I talk with Leathco. If you are a member of these forums and would be nice enough to talk with me then add me to your Skype. You just have to search for indieseoul and then send me an add request. All video game or computing topics are welcome and even if you are just an occasional poster or lurker that is also no problem. If you have a website to plug, a game gavel store or a you-tube channel that you want to talk about feel free to do so.

Please help me make an entertaining community style podcast!

Thank you Leathco! I'm glad that you are enjoying it and the friends talking about their favorite games is what I am going for. I wouldn't exactly call them interviews at all since it's just us fellow nerds nerding out about video games and other things we love. :)

Well Burger we talked for like three hours so sadly some of the content had to hit the cutting room floor. It hasn't been very easy to edit since it was difficult to cut anything. The episode with you however will probably clock in around two hours which is the longest episode of Stalking the Retro so far. I plan on releasing it as one full episode however and perhaps later on releasing some of the edited content as a "lost" episode of Stalking the Retro. I'm really happy to hear that you guys are enjoying it so far and please let me know when you can be on the show again!

Thanks again guys and I hope that more people will start listening to the show and decide to come on and talk with me about their own passions in the great hobby of retro gaming.

Sure I can do it during the week but I like to avoid Thursdays since that is my killer day. Good times are usually around 7.a.m KST or 7p.m. KST. Seoul time is the same as Tokyo time if you are having problems finding out what Korea standard time is. :) I don't know about Tulsa time but I heard that some people live on that. LOL :)

That being said if you see me online on skype I'm probably available. 7-12p.m most weeknights except Tue Thurs.

Listen to this great new episode of STR and win an awesome Korean care package shipped to your door and filled with awesome Korean tat items. One of the items will be an old school Tomagotchi and the rest will be a surprise. This week we are live in the Stalking the Retro studios, high atop my volcano lair, surrounded by a moat filled with crocodiles and retro fitted with frickin knives! Yeah that's the way we roll here in Seoul.

Episode 9 run down:
00:00-29:00 We discuss Battle Zone 2, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, 80's movies and the awesome and often overlooked NES game Karnov.
29:00-29:15 Play the Name that Game challenge and win an awesome Korean tat package. P.M. the answer to me for a chance to win.
32:53-40:14 We play Karnov and discuss our thoughts and memories of the game.
41:00-44:30 Random Skype call to the Mighty Correlationist.
44:31-45:15 Drunk description of Battle Zone II.
45:16-47:53 Laughing with Septic Lemon at a random You-Tube video.
47:54-48:54 Karnov Theme. Did you really just read all of this?

Nice episode Indie and Septic!

By the way, the Intellivision also had an Atari 2600 "system changer". Released to work with the Intellivision II (which was just a smaller, restyled and less expensive to manufacture version of the Intellivision Master Component), it could also work with the original Intellivision with a simple modification to the Intellivision motherboard.

I have one and it does what it's supposed to do.

I've listened to it twice now. And yeah, a very disjointed "Super Famicom" there, lol. Plus I was told that "Memoirs of a Gamer" got cut up and stuff was lost, meaning that I'm going to have to repeat what I said before....

Nah It's only my part of that segment that was lost. I have all of your first part and will release it in several segments in each new episode. The only part that was lost was when I switched over to the laptop because my Chinese Knockoff Cisco router kept failing. I'm hoping to get a replacement this week. Oddly the router works for a few hours and then heats up and I lose the internet. I'm going to tear my ISP a new one when they show up to deliver my new router.

Thanks for the info Nurmix. Glad you are both enjoying the show and yeah that was the longest and funniest episode so far!

Another week another great episode of Stalking the Retro!

Another cool episode, Indieseoul! I just listened to it in my office. The intro music track seems to work well. I'll put together some variations and alternate mixes that you can use in different parts of the podcast.

And thanks for the thanks too! Just FYI, while I do use a computer to sequence and record my music, I also use a great deal of outboard gear along with it, like my samplers, drum machines, and synthesizers. Originally I used an Atari STE running Cubase, then an Atari Falcon030 running Cubase Audio, but it's been a PC-based system running some variation of Cubase since around 2004.

Anyone interested can see some studio pictures here: http://www.nurmix.com/red6.htm

These were taken some time around 2003 I think (when I was still using the Atari Falcon), and the gear has changed quite a bit since then, but most of the stuff you see here is still in use.

Thanks, Scott!

It's only recently that I've been able to get it all set up again. I took it all down around mid-2008 (shortly before getting married, moving into a new house, and having a kid).

I managed to get all the outboard gear set up over the past few months as time permitted, and I've finally been able to sort out the final things with the recording PC (hardware, interfaces, drivers, software and fine tuning - as when I last had it set up, it was with a completely different PC).

Now I'll just have to set aside the time to start writing and recording again.

Well it does have the option of switching between 110 and 220 not that I would ever need that option. Still better than paying 75 to 90 bucks for a new used console. Trust me I looked for cheaper alternative power supplies the last 3 years and never found one that would work.

Cool, glad you're pleased!

All but two of those boxed Odyssey2 games include the instructions, so your total collection is only missing a handful of items at this point.

And a few things about the Intellivision stuff... once you collect it for a while, you'll find there were a number of box variations. The ones with the nice white plastic cart tray were the original ones. The ones missing that, but that still open like a book came next, and then the thinner non-book style (which you don't have yet) just opened from the top. The instruction manuals were originally printed in 4-colors, then down to 2, then when INTV bought the rights from Mattel and re-released the games, they usually went with the black and white type like you have with Sub Hunt. They also began just putting white end labels on the carts. I'm not such a purest that I collect box and label variations, but I do have several examples of the different types.

For the most part, the Odyssey2 game boxes stayed the same (at least the ones from Magnavox/Philips) through their entire run.

Enjoy the games man! We must find you a VOICE for your Odyssey2 now!

...oh, and an Intellivision with Intellivoice and ECS computer add-on too!

Thanks, SoCal. Glad you enjoyed it. I know you already know this, but it really is a great little system. Kind of hard to believe, but I didn't finally own one until earlier this year. I used to play a friend's system back in the day, and had fond memories. But after getting into it again, and picking up the majority of the US releases, I'm finding it's even more fun than I'd remembered. And it's not a difficult or expensive system to collect for (save for a few rarities). It was my excitement for the system that lead me to surprise Indieseoul with one a couple months back, and now he's quite an Odyssey2 fan as well.

Anyway, with regard to the podcast, Indieseoul really puts a lot of work into these, and while I can't speak for him, I'm sure he'd be more than pleased with you promotional ideas.

The Mattel handhelds are awesome. Just FYI, the Football is the second Mattel release of it, not the original (and by second release I DON'T mean the one they came out with a few years ago sold at Radio Shack). The original Football looked a little different (http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Mattel/FB.htm), and was simply called "Football", not "Football I". The "I" came about after they released "Football II (http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Mattel/FB2.htm)". As far as I know, both "Football" and "Football I" play and sound the same (which can't be said about the Radio Shack/modern version).

Vertibirds were awesome. Something I have been looking for at the swaps for years!

In the '70s, a good friend of my parents was an executive at Mattel. So, as a kid I was in a Mattel "Test Toy" program, where I think about once a month, my parents would receive a new toy that was either under development or about to be released, and I would play with it, and answer a bunch of survey questions from my Mom.

I remember getting several Vertibird variations; some of which I don't believe were ever officially released. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to hold onto any of them like I did with most of my other toys. And I don't currently have one, although I would definitely like to get a few some time.

I had one that was a star trek theme, wish I still had it as I have never seen another one. The control was round and had different "warp" speeds on it with a lever to one side for forward and reverse. It was really cool.

I also had the police set at one time as well. A few years ago a toy company (I dont recall the name) released a clone of the vertibird I believe was the chopper command series. I also have seen these little vertibird clones at Toys r us that look interesting.

I enjoyed STR 20 guys. Nicely done. As for my Elevator Action arcade game you mentioned... sadly, it's currently not working. It is blowing fuses on the power board, and the monitor is dead. I think it's probably a monitor chassis problem, either the flyback transformer or the the High Output Transistor. I'm going to check it out with a meter this weekend. I've been busy fixing some of the other games and haven't really messed with Elevator Action much.

I already have basic electronics / soldering knowledge, but I've never done much work with old school power supplies and CRTs. But there's a wealth of information out there. And I picked up the 3 DVD set from Arcade Repair Tips (yes, I know most of the videos are on YouTube for free), and I've already learned quite a bit more from those.

I also have a good friend who used to repair TVs. Plus, I sold one of the broken games (Taito's 10-Yard Fight) on Craigslist recently. And the guy who bought it has worked on arcade cabs for years, so I should be able to get assistance from him if needed too.

But let me ask you, what is a good source for flybacks, and other parts for these old cabs? And sure, tell me about the repair tech. It can't hurt!

Flybacks can be gotten from a load of sources to be honest. Kidna depends on the monitor. Try arcadeshop.com (http://arcadeshop.com)for starters and theres also the insanely fantastic Bob Roberts (http://www.therealbobroberts.net/). The monitor repair guy I use is here: http://www.arcadecup.com/
He can be a little slow as he is always backed up but the repair is top notch and guaranteed. All you need to do is remove the tube and send teh chasis (let me know if you need help with that).

Do you enjoy table top RPGs? Do you want to play an adventure similar to games like Dungeons and Dragons but at the same time learn a language? Well Kyle Simons has created an awesome game that could be up your alley. It's like an old school pad and pencil RPG but with a new twist. You are required to learn Korean in order to cast spells in the game. It's a community that I think will be exploding very soon. With the viral Kangnam Style video making it's rounds Korean has become the latest need to know language. Whether you are into old school RPGs or just want to hear a case study on how to win at Kickstarter, this is the episode for you. Check it out now and get in on this awesome kickstarter. Indie, originally I was going to link to the raw mp3 files and stream that way, but I found a way to stream via your RSS feed, so I used that instead. The benefit if this is that the app is essentially self-updating as far as content goes. Anytime you post a vid on YouTube or your RSS updates with a new Podcast, the app will automatically pick it up.

Septic doesn't strike me as someone who is easily offended. How could he be with the kind of twisted/tangent-topics that come up on STR on a regular basis!?
:HOW:

I don't recall if Indie and I had much much discussion about SoCal's Internet problems. Basically, it came down to a bad cable modem. But prior to my assistance, he had already replaced the router, which didn't solve the problem. Then he picked up another router, thinking that was the issue, but I didn't accompany him to the store, and the salesperson sold him a DSL modem/router combo box.

Since this obviously wouldn't work with his Cox cable Internet, we went back to the store and picked up a proper cable modem. However, it wouldn't connect with Cox because the MAC address of the modem was STILL REGISTERED TO AN EXISTING ACCOUNT! Even though it was boxed up and for sale by the store! So another trip back (this time I stayed behind to enjoy some wine and chile with SoCal's wife), and he picked up a different cable modem that, when I connected everything up and went through the re-activation with Cox, worked like a champ.

Vipp

STR 35: Nurmix And The Arcade Benefactor. (http://stalkingtheretro.wastedseconds.com/podcasts/str35.mp3)

The always awesome Nurmix finally returns and he has a lot to say in this episode. Nurmix aka Paul, aka Mike Oxlong has just started collecting arcade machines and we discuss his ever growing garage-cade. We discuss the repair and maintenance of classic arcade cabs, building a Mame machine, finding the right black light carpet, arcade machine horrors as well as the awesome benefits of having your own arcade man cave.

So grab an adult beverage of your choice and prepare yourself for another awesome episode of Stalking The Retro! Thanks again Nurmix for joining in the fun and remember if you want to be on STR just send me a message and join in for a show or ten. :)

I'd just like to say how offended I was at the blatant overuse of the "F word" in this episode! Shocking, really...
:LALA:

Having said that, it would make for a great drinking game. Every time Indieseoul or Nurmix say f%#k, someone has to drink! I'm thinking by about minute 12 everyone playing would be passed out or puking.

By the way, I talked to my "Arcade Benefactor", and he's fine with me naming him. But I think a contest would be fun for the forum members. There are clues in the podcast. Now I just need to come up with a prize. Stay tuned!

Thanks also to the RGR crew for mentioning it on the live news several times. You guys are truly great for creating such an awesome community and an incredible podcast to listen to every month.

Nurmix didn't reveal the name of the arcade benefactor to me but I have a couple of guesses. Hopefully I can tune in to the RGRU pre-show next week. It will be awesome to hear Nurmix and Socal Mike talking smack. :)

Lol. has Focus agreed on any music for his Arcade USA show yet mate? im looking forward to hearing what you have created.

I told him for now he can use whatever he wants from one of my older projects (Varactor Ratio (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=133167)), and I will put something new together for him in the not too distant future... I have to finish up the new version of Indieseoul's STR theme first, and I've got another project in the works for RGR. I wish I had more free time to work on music, but these days it can be difficult, with the wife, kids, my business, my arcade project, etc.

Here's another project I did a few years back with a female vocalist (named Susan Orvis). It's sort of darkwave/synthpop. The band was called NURVIS (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=128780) (a combination of our last names).

We discuss some awesome home brew for the Atari 2600 including the all new RetroGaming Roundup presents: CGE Adventures. We also run down some new projects on Kick Starter.
In the second half Sexual Lemon drops in and we discuss his search for an Intellivison! We also round up some retro news and discuss Ian's obsession with Zork.

In the second half Sexual Lemon drops in and we discuss his search for an Intellivison!

Hey Septic, if you need to know anything about the Intellivision, talk to me. It's my favorite retro console, for the most part.

I can also help you acquire some games as well... I have a fairly large collection of extras. And to the best of my knowledge, you won't have any issues with PAL/NTSC, as the console is region independent.

The 16 direction controller "disc" works as a d-pad in Astrosmash.

The game you couldn't remember the name of is Thunder Castle (see below).

And Indie... the Intellivision II controller is more painful to use. The shape is a bit smaller, and the side buttons are made of hard plastic, as opposed to the soft rubber of the original system controllers. Your fingers will not be happy after a long gaming session with the Intellivision II controllers! Plus the Intellivision II did away with the separate POWER and RESET buttons, so you have to press and hold the single button on the II for several seconds to turn it off.

Pretty much my favorite system as well Nurmix. The hardest part of how I'm collecting for it, is going to be getting everything in it's box. A couple games are going to run me $100+. In March my collection saw an original Intellivision added, which now sits with my Intellivision II, and the Super Pro System.

Yeah, as I was listening to the podcast at work (I was in the electronics security stockroom) I'm standing there yelling "Thunder Castle!!" at my iPhone. :p I have a copy of this game, but unfortunately it's without it's box.

Funny you should mention that, Vipp. I've been toying with the idea of starting my own Intellivision podcast. There doesn't seem to be one currently, although other podcasts certainly talk about it, and do an occasional feature. But the guy doing the Atari 2600 Game By Game made me feel like the Intellivision should have something similar; although not just a game by game thing.

But... I would need a partner in crime for this. Perhaps I'll start a new thread and see if anyone is interested.

I had actually toyed with the idea of doing an Intellivision podcast for the past couple years or so. Even had a domain registered for it and everything. This was during that time when my computer was acting up and I had to reset almost every 15-30 minutes, so I put the idea on the backburner. By the time I got the computer fixed, the domain expired.
I'd be all for working on an Intellivision podcast. Heck, I would have been looking for a partner back then as well. I'm sure we could get Keith to come on and talk about some stuff as well.
Actually..I just looked it up, and the domain is still available to purchase. Wondering who I should go through to buy it again.
