I bet Scott's four picks alone take about two hours... ;-) "Pin X was released with a totally revolutionary solenoid, that used a 16 ohm resistor connected to the coil, whereas previous solenoids could only get away with a 4 ohm resistor. I actually built an airplane that used this type of solenoid when I was eight..."

Looking forward to it!

LOL, most of the length comes from us filling in bits of background knowledge, mostly Scott telling me things about pinball that I didn't know and where I keep asking dumb questions.

Actually there is a bit you will hear when SoCal answers a call and Scott and I yak for a while. I cut that bit down to a few minutes but it went for over an hour and will be included in an upcoming special.

Just finished listening to the Tim Arnold interview. What an asshole!
Seriously, he says "get your ass off the couch grow up and get laid by playing pinball." This cantankerous old shit head just pissed me off. Why was he talking to you guys like he was constantly proving a point?
You two did a great job with what you had to work with on that interview. Yeeesh.

I agree with Scott that it would be smart to go to SD card based games however the Wii 2 is rumored to be an HD console and may be going for longer more adult style games. Now that could still work as long as the games are short but longer games with current style graphics would need larger SD cards which are more expensive.

The average game these days for the Xbox 360 and PS3 are between 6 and 9gbs. The Ps3 has several games that are between 20- 40GBs. I believe optical media at the size of 6gbs or more would still be much cheaper then solid state chips. In the end it would be a nice thing but optical media is still a much cheaper option for current gen games. I guess it depends on if Nintendo's console will try to compete with current gen style games or will they just produce a console that plays similar games as the original wii but in HD. Not to mention discs scratch which may cause the gamer to buy the game again which is good for the game maker. (sucks for us! LOL)

Hmmm, I guess its down to perception then because he didn't come across that way to me and I wasn't there either.

Count me in the category that was wondering why this guy was being a prick about video games. I couldn't tell if he was being tongue-in-cheek or serious, but I was glad it was a short interview.

Tim can be a bit intense, and like others in our hobby can rub some people the wrong way at first glance. But from having been around him in person and knowing
what he does for people and the reasons he does it I can put him no other place than the good guy category. Well go back and see Tim again this year and have a great time. Sort of like Billy Mitchell, how much is hype, how much is being eccentric, and is he really a jerk?

The only time during the whole show (well, I'm at the very beginning of the news segment right now) I thought "God, what an ass." was the alternative Top 10 Pinball Innovations or whatever. Loads of great points, but it seemed like the person was just basically saying "I'm right, you're wrong. Hang up your mics, give it up, fuck you ... I wrote the book on this shit. Have a nice day."

The person who provided that alternative Top 10 was just flat out insulting and came off like an arrogant prick with good points who couldn't be bothered to bring it up in the forums where people can react and provide feedback.

That being said, as far as the pinball restoration business thing goes, if I had a table I'd rather have an arrogant prick who knows what they're doing than an easy-going person who doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground. lol

And, no offense intended to the person in question. That's just how they came off to me in that one recording. I'm sure this person (don't remember who) is great to talk to, just the overall tone of that submission was like nails on a chalkboard.

Tim rubbed me the wrong way as well, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. The message he gave without the insults and language was what counted. If you stay indoors playing video games, not much is going to happen with your life. We need more socialization with gamers with stuff like arcades, conventions and just plain get togethers. It's sad that stuff like waiting in line overnight for a system release or even conventions are laughed at or trashed on by too many of today's gamers. They throw the stereotype at anyone going and shun someone who even suggests going to one.

The thing you mentioned about Screwattack not even coming over to talk to you had me kind of scratching my head. Maybe they were having an off day, trying to get through everything or misheard something. My first reaction was "Huh, that's odd, usually they'd be right on that.".

I'll be heading to The Pinball Wizard Arcade on May 14th to celebrate my 1 year wedding anniversary (it's on May 15th) and hanging out with a bunch of friends. This month's top 10 has giving me some games to go try out. Already played the Family Guy and I didn't get the chance to play Mars Attacks. Played the Star Wars episode 1, which BTW, when you guys mentioned Pinball 2000, I didn't realize you meant those 2 machines. I can't remember how much of that list is actually there.

At first, Tim rubbed me the wrong way, too, but after a bit I kind of remembered that:

1. I can't see his face. So, it may not sound that harsh.
2. He is acting a lot like a zealot, which I think he'd have to be in his position.

Ultimately, I felt that he was kind of like the people I'd meet in Science Fiction fandom every now and then. They're just very, very, VERY sure of themselves and they're going to let you know that you're wrong for your choice. Eh, you can't get too upset about it. All you get by doing that is ... feeling upset.

Indeed. The pinball vs. video thing seems silly to me. I've seen the same thing within the pinball community with EM vs. SS games. Even people getting that way of DMD vs. Alpha games.

I didn't care much for the video games for kids, pinball is for men and will get you laid cause they are public. Umm....yea, that arcade game beside your pin is also a video game, in public, just as social as that pin. Perhaps even more social, as arcade games can have 2 or 4 players on one machine. Ever see a 4 player pin?

Also not surprised by the screwattack snub. The way craig skitsmas handles problems is horrible. Look at the handsome tom or guru larry situations.

You mean how everyone overreacted and assumed way too much right? Craig did his best to explain what happened in those situations, but of course people threw away the explanation and substituted their own. If he had simply said "It was a business decision and that's all I want to say about it." then even more flipping out would of happened.

02-05-11, 05:06
Yea, I meant 2 or 4 player simul like street fighter 2 or the xmen game.

As far as craig, I lost all respect when screwattack posted a vid of them more or less ripping larry a new one. It wasn't explaining the situation. It was being aa dick and akin to a gang attack. There was nothing professional about it, just a bunch of kids lshing out over other peoples opinions on an uneasy situation, and it was sick.

Oh, shit totally got what your putting down, What you have to remember is that we are a shock jock show as well as a gaming show in some extent. We exaggerate things for comic effect. I am a notorious fat ass my self, and my wife is thin but short, I always tell her we look like the number 10 together. It is not that I am insensitive to weight but rather self deprecating. But if you look at Marlyn Monroe she was a big girl and was not exactly Amai Liu in the porn world. But if that is how you get down then sweet. And we all go through evolutions too, I recall years ago when I wanted nothing more than DD, and then I saw A's that could put your eyes out, fetishes change, but they are all cool with us!

The fried peanutbutter cups I've hard are the Mini size. I don't think I could stomach a full size fried cup. They are really good, nut just in an ironic "Wow, look what I'm eating!" way.

Because of their size, the sweet batter is kept at a minimum. The cup itself get really warm and starts to melt, giving it a creamy cheese cake like texture. You generally get three or four cups per order, so it's perfect for splitting with somebody.

After talking to Tim during my pilgrimage to PHOF; I think he is really a nice guy, but yes, a bit of a crusty, "get off my lawn" type dude. I can say that he must not really hate video games as there are quite a number of them in the HOF and they are as meticulously cared for as the pins. I for one admire the work they are doing. I spent about six hours there over two days and they were constantly working their ass off on these machines, and the problems I reported were checked out quickly because they truly care. All that said, the interview wasn't the best; especially since the subject matter couldn't have been more intriguing for me. Morgan

I'm still making my way through the Top 10 in the podcast, but I thought I'd chime in here and say that Tilt: The Battle to Save Pinball (http://www.tilt-movie.com/) is a very good pin documentary. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It details the stories behind Pinball 2000.

So, I finally heard the alternative Top 10 from Diane Lauer. It was fairly clear in the early going that she was irritated and she even said that her husband presented the list in such a way to get a rise out of her. He kind of primed the pump, so to speak. I was pretty much on the side of the others here that she was coming off as very arrogant.

But she did soften out and I think she had some good points. I liked the point about ramps. The dot matrix screens benefiting diagnosticians and owners was an excellent and on-point comment. Very good stuff.

Overall, I think she is a bit competitive and combative. I probably wouldn't pick her as an addition to the show during Top 10 pinball shows. But she had some good points and I appreciated hearing the piece.

Ok, finally finished the Podcast today. Should I be offended that SoCal didn't remember playing Family Guy with me @ PHOF? Nah, probably just too much to drink and overwhelmed from his pilgrimage to the Liberace museum.

Great Top 10, but when you started you said it was all about game play for this one, and I sure heard a lot of artwork discussion. Let's see all of that come out at a separate debate.

Finally, UKMike, I don't know where the hell you located that incredibly annoying song that played between pieces. That shit was awful, and made me look forward to Monday. Great show as always guys.

Well..........I was pretty surprised that Scott (& M&M) didn't know that "Lost in the Zone" was the 6-Ball Multiball Wizard mode represented by the "?" on the doorknob of the Mode Door on the playfield-collectable after all the other modes have been played. Tut tut ;)

PS. I didn't mind the length, thought Tim was OK, and consider SoCal VERY hard done by.
I'm lucky enough to have played a good few tables in RL- but still a few I've only played in VP-Visual Pinball is coooool :) Maybe you could track down some VP people to interview? Randy Davis, Noah Fentz, Pacdude, Destruk, etc.

QUOTE]

My usual top 10 experience is to hear SoCal introduce a few of the games I would be championing, were I there, and then the other two mooks slap those selections around like a red-headed step child and I sulk for a while. This month, however, the tables turned a bit. Funhouse needed to be beat down and SoCal played the curmudgeon on Family Guy and Revenge From Mars, which are both amazing and deep games, regardless of when they were manufactured. I really think he was just a little butt-hurt and acting out his frustration. You guys should really stop hurting his butt....well, not completely. At least give him a kiss and buy a tube of "Top-ten Eze". Morgan

Ok it's been a couple of days now without sleep, so the tinfoil hat isn't working.

I think it might be ricocheting that bloody song back and forth in my skull. It can't escape.

This reminds me of the terrible toll taken in the great Bucks Fizz-'Making Your Mind Up' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pACePi441ds) battle of '81.

Many fine men were lost that year. I thought I'd seen the last of such waste of human life, yet here appears bloody Rebecca bloody Black reminding me again and again and again how exciting Fridays are when you're 14.
